Introduction to Bioinformatics – Teacher Assistant

I served as a Teacher Assistant for the Introduction to Bioinformatics Training (IBT) Course 2025 organized by the Faculty of Medicine at Sfax University, Tunisia, in collaboration with the AfriGen-D Project. The classroom-based course ran from 15 April to 15 July 2025, and I contributed to approximately 80 hours of the course facilitation, supporting participants as a local instructor in practical exercises, discussions, and workflow training.

The course curriculum provided participants with comprehensive training in bioinformatics, covering key themes such as bioinformatics resources and databases, including NCBI and EBI, data formats, and ontologies. Participants were introduced to the Linux environment, learning to navigate directories, manipulate files, and execute basic commands. The course also covered sequence alignment theory and applications, including BLAST and pairwise alignment, as well as multiple sequence alignment (MSA) theory, generation, interpretation, and visualization. Additional topics included molecular evolution and phylogenetics, and an overview of genomics, including genome annotation, the Ensembl genome browser, and genetic variation resources such as HapMap and the 1000 Genomes Project. As a teaching assistant, I guided participants through practical exercises, supported learning during hands-on sessions, and helped ensure smooth delivery of the course materials.

In recognition of my contributions, I received an official Staff Recognition Letter from the AfriGen-D Project, acknowledging my support in bioinformatics capacity building and training across Africa. This experience allowed me to develop teaching, mentoring, and organizational skills while contributing to a high-impact educational initiative.
